What Is A Motorcycle Endorsement?
A motorcycle endorsement is the addition of a note or credential to an existing license stating that you are now legally allowed to ride a motorcycle on public roads. This is used in situations where you already have a car license but then also pass the required testing in order to be allowed to ride motorcycles too.
Example: Judy has an existing car driver’s license for the state of North Carolina. After passing the required motorcycle testing for her state she then receives a motorcycle endorsement. Judy is now legally allowed to both drive her car as well as ride her motorcycle.
What Is A Motorcycle Insurance Endorsement?
Similar to the motorcycle endorsement (which means that you are adding the ability to ride a motorcycle onto your existing car license), a motorcycle insurance endorsement means that you are adding motorcycle covering onto an existing car insurance policy.
How Is This Different From A Motorcycle Insurance Policy?
A motorcycle insurance policy is standalone coverage for your motorcycle, with restrictions and limits specifically detailed for the coverage of your motorcycle. A motorcycle insurance endorsement means that you have an existing car insurance policy and you are just adding your motorcycle on for coverage. Any existing limitations such as maximum payout amounts will usually be taken straight from your existing car insurance policy.
Motorcycle insurance endorsements seem to be phasing out at present, and guidelines do vary between companies. It is worth discussing in detail with your insurance provider the differences between these two options before deciding which one is right for you.
Example: Judy has an existing car insurance policy with company XYZ. Judy then purchases a motorcycle and calls XYZ and asks them to add a motorcycle endorsement onto her existing car insurance policy. In most cases Judy will receive a single bill which covers her car and motorcycle.
Now you should have a basic understanding of what is a motorcycle endorsement as well as the difference between a motorcycle insurance endorsement and a motorcycle insurance policy.
